The 2008 NAACP Political party platform comparison is now available!!!

Every four years, in addition to choosing nominees for President and Vice President, both the Democratic and Republican parties produce "party platforms".  A political party's platform is perhaps the best reflection of the party's values – it lays out their goals, their priorities and their core beliefs.

Both the Democratic and Republican platform committees held hearings throughout the country in the summer of 2008 to gain insight into the priorities of different constituencies.  Both parties considered testimony from a broad spectrum of individuals and groups, reviewed common and contrasting views, mixed them with historical party priorities as well as long-standing party goals and beliefs, and came out with a final product – the party platform.  Both parties unveiled their platforms just prior to their national conventions in late August (for the Democrats) and early September (for the Republicans).  The platforms were then considered and ultimately approved of by the entire body of delegates to the conventions from across the Nation.

The NAACP submitted written testimony to both the Democratic and Republican platform committees and asked that our non-partisan priorities for the Nation be incorporated into their final product.  Our testimony was drawn from our legislative priorities.

As we have in the past, the NAACP Washington Bureau has taken the Democratic and Republican parties' platforms, reviewed their comments and commitments as they pertain to priorities to the NAACP, and reproduced them verbatim in a side-by-side format for you to review.  The final document is attached.  Specifically, the issues that are included in the NAACP comparison reflect policies that have been approved of by the National Board of Directors and through the NAACP resolutions process.

Attached is the 2008 NAACP political Party Platform Comparison.  We hope that you find it informational and educational as you prepare to vote on November 4.  To review the party platforms in their entirety, members of the public are encouraged to go to each party's website – www.democrats.org/agenda and www.gopplatform2008.com.  Of course, the NAACP Washington Bureau is always happy to answer any questions or take any comments you may have as well at (202) 463-2940 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
